A little bit about the project.

Project Brief & Challenges

Planetshakers Conference is an annual 4 nights and 3 days event filled with vibrant music and dynamic speakers, all of which are designed to empower and encourage young people in their relationship with Jesus. It was held by Planetshakers band in Melbourne where over 10K people came and gathered at Hisense Arena. Two and a half weeks before the 2018 conference, the Planetshakers team came up last minute with a new song called Electric Atmosphere. I was approached by their creative director, Christel, to create an animated visual and lyric video which were then used as a part of their stage design.

This animated video was also published on their official Youtube channel which has, now, reach approximately 2.7M and 158K views.

The main challenge of this project is not only the tight time deadline but also the stage structure and set-up. I need to create an animated video that is versatile enough that it can be projected onto surfaces of different sizes (the curved screen, the pillar, and the ceiling— see images below).

Solution

The Electric Atmosphere song had a funky and pop beat immersed in it.
Thus, I took inspiration from the early 2010s vaporwave art style to create a visual look that brings a retro and fun atmosphere into the arena. Bold neon shapes were utilised so that the visual stand out even when seen from the very last row in the arena.

As mentioned before, the deadline is quite tight. So, I intentionally developed a visual look that is slightly abstract so that the design can be projected onto surfaces of different sizes without much adjustment. By doing this, the screens feel connected and coherent with one another. On the day of the conference, I also collaborated with the sound engineers to ensure that the animation was played on time, aligning with the beat of the songs as the musician started performing on stage.

I have to thank Rodelle (the architect), the lighting team, and the production team because they are the ones who managed to bring the design from my computer screen to the stage screens. I also want to thank Micaela, a fellow animator, who helped me to finish this project on time by assisting me in animating the lyrics.
