Planetshakers Kingdom Conference

Planetshakers Conference is an annual event spanning four nights and three days, featuring lively music and engaging speakers aimed at inspiring and uplifting young people in their faith journey with Jesus. Hosted by the Planetshakers band in Melbourne, the 2018 conference attracted over 10,000 attendees to Hisense Arena. Just two and a half weeks before the 2018 conference, the Planetshakers team decided to introduce a new song titled "Electric Atmosphere." I was contacted by their creative director, Christel Chia, to produce an animated visual and lyric video for use in their stage design.

The animated video was uploaded to Planetshakers official YouTube channel, where it has garnered approximately 2.7 million views and 158,000 likes.

Versatile Design for Multi-Screen Projection

The primary challenge of this project was managing the tight deadline and adapting to the stage’s complex structure and setup. I had to create an animated video that could be flexibly projected onto various surfaces, including the curved screen, the pillar, and the ceiling (see images below — the 3D render of the stage was created by Rodelle Lee, the architect).

Abstract Vaporwave Art

To address this, I deliberately designed a visual style that is somewhat abstract, allowing the design to be projected onto various surfaces with minimal adjustments. This approach helps create a unified and cohesive appearance across all the screens.

The Electric Atmosphere song had a funky and pop beat immersed in it. I drew inspiration from the early 2010s Vaporwave Art style to introduce a retro and playful visual ambiance to the arena. Big and bold neon shapes were utilised so that the visuals stand out even when viewed from different vantage points.

Team work makes the dream work

In collaboration with the production and lighting team, we successfully created an immersive and funky “electric” experience. We incorporated purple and blue lighting to replicate the hues of the animated visuals. On the day of the performance, I worked closely with the sound engineers to ensure the animation was in sync with the music, aligning perfectly with the beat as the musicians performed live on stage.
